wǒ jiàn rì guāng zhī xià yǒu yì zōng huò huàn zhòng yā zài rén shēn shàng ,

There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is heavy on men:

使

jiù shì rén méng shén cì tā zī cái 、 fēng fù 、 zūn róng , yǐ zhì tā xīn lǐ suǒ yuàn de yí yàng dōu bù quē , zhǐ shì shén shǐ tā bù néng chī yòng , fǎn yǒu wài rén lái chī yòng 。 zhè shì xū kōng , yě shì huò huàn 。

a man to whom God gives riches, wealth, and honor, so that he lacks nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God gives him no power to eat of it, but an alien eats it. This is vanity, and it is an evil disease.

rén ruò shēng yì bǎi gè ér zi , huó xǔ duō suì shù , yǐ zhì tā de nián rì shèn duō , xīn lǐ què bù dé mǎn xiǎng fú lè , yòu bù dé mái zàng ; jù wǒ shuō , nà bú dào qī ér luò de tāi bǐ tā dǎo hǎo 。

If a man fathers a hundred children, and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not filled with good, and moreover he has no burial, I say that a stillborn child is better than he;

yīn wèi xū xū ér lái , àn àn ér qù , míng zì bèi hēi àn zhē bì ,

for it comes in vanity, and departs in darkness, and its name is covered with darkness.

bìng qiě méi yǒu jiàn guò tiān rì , yě háo wú zhī jué ; zhè tāi , bǐ nà rén dǎo xiǎng ān xī 。

Moreover it has not seen the sun nor known it. This has rest rather than the other.

nà rén suī rán huó qiān nián , zài huó qiān nián , què bù xiǎng fú , zhòng rén qǐ bù dōu guī yī gè dì fāng qù ma ?

Yes, though he live a thousand years twice told, and yet fails to enjoy good, don’t all go to one place?

rén de láo lù dōu wèi kǒu fù , xīn lǐ què bù zhī zú 。

All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

zhè yàng kàn lái , zhì huì rén bǐ yú mèi rén yǒu shén me cháng chù ne ? qióng rén zài zhòng rén miàn qián zhī dào rú hé xíng , yǒu shén me cháng chù ne ?

For what advantage has the wise more than the fool? What has the poor man, that knows how to walk before the living?

yǎn jīng suǒ kàn de bǐ xīn lǐ wàng xiǎng de dǎo hǎo 。 zhè yě shì xū kōng , yě shì bǔ fēng 。

Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.

xiān qián suǒ yǒu de , zǎo yǐ qǐ le míng , bìng zhī dào hé wèi rén , tā yě bù néng yǔ nà bǐ zì jǐ lì dà de xiāng zhēng 。

Whatever has been, its name was given long ago; and it is known what man is; neither can he contend with him who is mightier than he.

jiā zēng xū fú de shì jì duō , zhè yǔ rén yǒu shén me yì chù ne ?

For there are many words that create vanity. What does that profit man?

rén yì shēng xū dù de rì zi , jiù rú yǐng ér jīng guò , shuí zhī dào shén me yǔ tā yǒu yì ne ? shuí néng gào sù tā shēn hòu zài rì guāng zhī xià yǒu shén me shì ne ?

For who knows what is good for man in life, all the days of his vain life which he spends like a shadow? For who can tell a man what will be after him under the sun?
