Syllables are counted from the dictionary pronunciation of every word in the text, tone marks included, so mā and mǎ count separately. The total is close to the full inventory of Mandarin, which is itself only about 1,300 tone-marked syllables — one reason spoken Chinese leans so heavily on context.

The distribution is as skewed as everything else here. The commonest syllable, de, accounts for 48,520 of the 663,876 word tokens on its own, and the top eight — de, tā, nǐ, wǒ, men, shì, rén, hé — carry a large share of what is read aloud.

Text: 和合本 (Chinese Union Version), simplified script — public domain — 66 books, 1,189 chapters, 31,021 verses.
Words: forward maximum matching against CC-CEDICT (this site's own segmentation). A different segmenter gives slightly different word counts; character counts are unaffected.
HSK levels: HSK 3.0 levels from the complete-hsk-vocabulary list; band 7 covers HSK 7-9.
Reading times: 260 characters a minute — an assumption about a fluent adult reader, not a measurement.
