Difficulty here is measured the same way as ease: the share of word tokens at HSK 1-3, tie-broken by distinct characters per 1,000 characters. Books that score badly do so for one recurring reason — they are lists of names.

The bottom of the table is 1 Chronicles (49.7%), Ezra (50.8%), Nahum (51.3%), Obadiah (51.4%), 2 Chronicles (51.7%), Proverbs (52.5%). Genealogies, census records and prophetic oracles pack unfamiliar proper nouns into every verse, and proper nouns are exactly what no HSK list contains.
