sā mǔ ěr nián jì lǎo mài , jiù lì tā ér zi zuò yǐ sè liè dī shì shī 。

When Samuel was old, he made his sons judges over Israel.

cháng zǐ míng jiào yuē ěr , cì zǐ míng jiào yà bǐ yà ; tā men zài bié shì bā zuò shì shī 。

Now the name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah. They were judges in Beersheba.

tā ér zi bù xíng tā de dào , tān tú cái lì , shōu shòu huì lù , qū wǎng zhèng zhí 。

His sons didn’t walk in his ways, but turned away after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.

yǐ sè liè de zhǎng lǎo dōu jù jí , lái dào lā mǎ jiàn sā mǔ ěr ,

Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together and came to Samuel to Ramah.

duì tā shuō :「 nǐ nián jì lǎo mài le , nǐ ér zi bù xíng nǐ de dào 。 xiàn zài qiú nǐ wèi wǒ men lì yí gè wáng zhì lǐ wǒ men , xiàng liè guó yí yàng 。」

They said to him, “Behold, you are old, and your sons don’t walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”

sā mǔ ěr bù xǐ yuè tā men shuō 「 lì yí gè wáng zhì lǐ wǒ men 」, tā jiù dǎo gào yē hé huá 。

But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” Samuel prayed to the LORD.

yē hé huá duì sā mǔ ěr shuō :「 bǎi xìng xiàng nǐ shuō de yí qiè huà , nǐ zhǐ guǎn yī cóng ; yīn wèi tā men bú shì yàn qì nǐ , nǎi shì yàn qì wǒ , bú yào wǒ zuò tā men de wáng 。

The LORD said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me as the king over them.

zì cóng wǒ lǐng tā men chū āi jí dào rú jīn , tā men cháng cháng lí qì wǒ , shì fèng bié shén 。 xiàn zài tā men xiàng nǐ suǒ xíng de , shì zhào tā men sù lái suǒ xíng de 。

According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, in that they have forsaken me and served other gods, so they also do to you.

gù cǐ nǐ yào yī cóng tā men de huà , zhǐ shì dāng jǐng jiè tā men , gào sù tā men jiāng lái nà wáng zěn yàng guǎn xiá tā men 。」

Now therefore, listen to their voice. However, you shall protest solemnly to them, and shall show them the way of the king who will reign over them.”

sā mǔ ěr jiāng yē hé huá de huà dōu chuán gěi qiú tā lì wáng de bǎi xìng , shuō :

Samuel told all the LORD’s words to the people who asked him for a king.

「管轄你們的王必這樣行:他必派你們的兒子為他趕車、跟馬,奔走在車前;

「 guǎn xiá nǐ men de wáng bì zhè yàng xíng : tā bì pài nǐ men de ér zi wèi tā gǎn chē 、 gēn mǎ , bēn zǒu zài chē qián ;

He said, “This will be the way of the king who shall reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them as his servants, for his chariots and to be his horsemen; and they will run before his chariots.

又派他們作千夫長、五十夫長,為他耕種田地,收割莊稼,打造軍器和車上的器械;

yòu pài tā men zuò qiān fū cháng 、 wǔ shí fū cháng , wèi tā gēng zhòng tián dì , shōu gē zhuāng jia , dǎ zào jūn qì hé chē shàng de qì xiè ;

He will appoint them to him for captains of thousands and captains of fifties; and he will assign some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest; and to make his instruments of war and the instruments of his chariots.

必取你們的女兒為他製造香膏,做飯烤餅;

bì qǔ nǐ men de nǚ ér wèi tā zhì zào xiāng gāo , zuò fàn kǎo bǐng ;

He will take your daughters to be perfumers, to be cooks, and to be bakers.

yě bì qǔ nǐ men zuì hǎo de tián dì 、 pú táo yuán 、 gǎn lǎn yuán cì gěi tā de chén pú 。

He will take your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, even your best, and give them to his servants.

你們的糧食和葡萄園所出的,他必取十分之一給他的太監和臣僕;

nǐ men de liáng shí hé pú táo yuán suǒ chū de , tā bì qǔ shí fēn zhī yī gěi tā de tài jian hé chén pú ;

He will take one tenth of your seed and of your vineyards, and give it to his officers and to his servants.

yòu bì qǔ nǐ men de pú rén bì nǚ , jiàn zhuàng de shào nián rén hé nǐ men de lǘ , gòng tā de chāi yì 。

He will take your male servants, your female servants, your best young men, and your donkeys, and assign them to his own work.

nǐ men de yáng qún tā bì qǔ shí fēn zhī yī , nǐ men yě bì zuò tā de pú rén 。

He will take one tenth of your flocks; and you will be his servants.

nà shí nǐ men bì yīn suǒ xuǎn de wáng āi qiú yē hé huá , yē hé huá què bú yīng yǔn nǐ men 。」

You will cry out in that day because of your king whom you will have chosen for yourselves; and the LORD will not answer you in that day.”

bǎi xìng jìng bù kěn tīng sā mǔ ěr de huà , shuō :「 bù rán ! wǒ men dìng yào yí gè wáng zhì lǐ wǒ men ,

But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us,

shǐ wǒ men xiàng liè guó yí yàng , yǒu wáng zhì lǐ wǒ men , tǒng lǐng wǒ men , wèi wǒ men zhēng zhàn 。」

that we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.”

sā mǔ ěr tīng jiàn bǎi xìng zhè yí qiè huà , jiù jiāng zhè huà chén míng zài yē hé huá miàn qián 。

Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.

yē hé huá duì sā mǔ ěr shuō :「 nǐ zhǐ guǎn yī cóng tā men de huà , wèi tā men lì wáng 。」 sā mǔ ěr duì yǐ sè liè rén shuō :「 nǐ men gè guī gè chéng qù ba !」

The LORD said to Samuel, “Listen to their voice, and make them a king.” Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Everyone go to your own city.”
