dàn rú jīn , bǐ wǒ nián shào de rén xì xiào wǒ ; qí rén zhī fù wǒ céng miǎo shì , bù kěn ān zài kān shǒu wǒ yáng qún de gǒu zhōng 。

“But now those who are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I considered unworthy to put with my sheep dogs.

tā men zhuàng nián de qì lì jì yǐ shuāi bài , qí shǒu zhī lì yǔ wǒ hé yì ne ?

Of what use is the strength of their hands to me, men in whom ripe age has perished?

饿

tā men yīn qióng fá jī è , shēn tǐ kū shòu , zài huāng fèi qī liáng de yōu àn zhōng kěn gān zào zhī dì ,

They are gaunt from lack and famine. They gnaw the dry ground, in the gloom of waste and desolation.

zài cǎo cóng zhī zhōng cǎi xián cǎo , luó téng de gēn wèi tā men de shí wù 。

They pluck salt herbs by the bushes. The roots of the broom tree are their food.

tā men cóng rén zhōng bèi gǎn chū ; rén zhuī hǎn tā men rú zéi yì bān ,

They are driven out from among men. They cry after them as after a thief,

yǐ zhì tā men zhù zài huāng gǔ zhī jiān , zài dì dòng hé yán xué zhōng ;

so that they live in frightful valleys, and in holes of the earth and of the rocks.

zài cǎo cóng zhōng jiào huàn , zài jīng jí xià jù jí 。

They bray among the bushes. They are gathered together under the nettles.

zhè dōu shì yú wán xià jiàn rén de ér nǚ ; tā men bèi biān dǎ , gǎn chū jìng wài 。

They are children of fools, yes, children of wicked men. They were flogged out of the land.

xiàn zài zhè xiē rén yǐ wǒ wèi gē qǔ , yǐ wǒ wèi xiào tán 。

“Now I have become their song. Yes, I am a byword to them.

tā men yàn wù wǒ , duǒ zài páng biān zhàn zhe , bú zhù dì tǔ tuò mò zài wǒ liǎn shàng 。

They abhor me, they stand aloof from me, and don’t hesitate to spit in my face.

sōng kāi tā men de shéng suǒ kǔ dài wǒ , zài wǒ miàn qián tuō qù pèi tóu 。

For he has untied his cord, and afflicted me; and they have thrown off restraint before me.

zhè děng xià liú rén zài wǒ yòu biān qǐ lái , tuī kāi wǒ de jiǎo , zhù chéng zhàn lù lái gōng jī wǒ 。

On my right hand rise the rabble. They thrust aside my feet. They cast their ways of destruction up against me.

zhè xiē wú rén bāng zhù de , huǐ huài wǒ de dào , jiā zēng wǒ de zāi 。

They mar my path. They promote my destruction without anyone’s help.

tā men lái rú tóng chuǎng jìn dà pò kǒu , zài huǐ huài zhī jiān gǔn zài wǒ shēn shàng 。

As through a wide breach they come. They roll themselves in amid the ruin.

jīng kǒng lín dào wǒ , qū zhú wǒ de zūn róng rú fēng ; wǒ de fú lù rú yún guò qù 。

Terrors have turned on me. They chase my honor as the wind. My welfare has passed away as a cloud.

xiàn zài wǒ xīn jí qí bēi shāng ; kùn kǔ de rì zi jiāng wǒ zhuā zhù 。

“Now my soul is poured out within me. Days of affliction have taken hold of me.

yè jiān , wǒ lǐ miàn de gǔ tou cì wǒ , téng tòng bù zhǐ , hǎo xiàng kěn wǒ 。

In the night season my bones are pierced in me, and the pains that gnaw me take no rest.

yīn shén de dà lì , wǒ de wài yī wū huì bù kān , yòu rú lǐ yī de lǐng zǐ jiāng wǒ chán zhù 。

My garment is disfigured by great force. It binds me about as the collar of my tunic.

shén bǎ wǒ rēng zài yū ní zhōng , wǒ jiù xiàng chén tǔ hé lú huī yì bān 。

He has cast me into the mire. I have become like dust and ashes.

zhǔ a , wǒ hū qiú nǐ , nǐ bú yīng yǔn wǒ ; wǒ zhàn qǐ lái , nǐ jiù dìng jīng kàn wǒ 。

I cry to you, and you do not answer me. I stand up, and you gaze at me.

nǐ xiàng wǒ biàn xīn , dài wǒ cán rěn , yòu yòng dà néng zhuī bī wǒ ,

You have turned to be cruel to me. With the might of your hand you persecute me.

使使

bǎ wǒ tí zài fēng zhōng , shǐ wǒ jià fēng ér xíng , yòu shǐ wǒ xiāo miè zài liè fēng zhōng 。

You lift me up to the wind, and drive me with it. You dissolve me in the storm.

使

wǒ zhī dào yào shǐ wǒ lín dào sǐ dì , dào nà wèi zhòng shēng suǒ dìng de yīn zhái 。

For I know that you will bring me to death, to the house appointed for all living.

rán ér , rén pú dǎo qǐ bù shēn shǒu ? yù zāi nàn qǐ bù qiú jiù ne ?

“However doesn’t one stretch out a hand in his fall? Or in his calamity therefore cry for help?

rén zāo nán , wǒ qǐ bú wèi tā kū qì ne ? rén qióng fá , wǒ qǐ bú wèi tā yōu chóu ne ?

Didn’t I weep for him who was in trouble? Wasn’t my soul grieved for the needy?

便

wǒ yǎng wàng dé hǎo chù , zāi huò jiù dào le ; wǒ děng dài guāng míng , hēi àn biàn lái le 。

When I looked for good, then evil came. When I waited for light, darkness came.

wǒ xīn lǐ fán rǎo bù ān , kùn kǔ de rì zi lín dào wǒ shēn 。

My heart is troubled, and doesn’t rest. Days of affliction have come on me.

wǒ méi yǒu rì guāng jiù āi kū xíng qù ; wǒ zài huì zhōng zhàn zhe qiú jiù 。

I go mourning without the sun. I stand up in the assembly, and cry for help.

wǒ yǔ yě gǒu wèi dì xiong , yǔ tuó niǎo wèi tóng bàn 。

I am a brother to jackals, and a companion to ostriches.

wǒ de pí fū hēi ér tuō luò ; wǒ de gǔ tou yīn rè shāo jiāo 。

My skin grows black and peels from me. My bones are burned with heat.

suǒ yǐ , wǒ de qín yīn biàn wèi bēi yīn ; wǒ de xiāo shēng biàn wèi kū shēng 。

Therefore my harp has turned to mourning, and my pipe into the voice of those who weep.
