xià tiān luò xuě , shōu gē shí xià yǔ , dōu bù xiāng yí ; yú mèi rén dé zūn róng yě shì rú cǐ 。

Like snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honor is not fitting for a fool.

má què wǎng lái , yàn zi fān fēi ; zhè yàng , wú gù de zhòu zǔ yě bì bù lín dào 。

Like a fluttering sparrow, like a darting swallow, so the undeserved curse doesn’t come to rest.

biān zǐ shì wèi dǎ mǎ , pèi tóu shì wèi lè lǘ ; xíng zhàng shì wèi dǎ yú mèi rén de bèi 。

A whip is for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the back of fools!

bú yào zhào yú mèi rén de yú wàng huà huí dá tā , kǒng pà nǐ yǔ tā yí yàng 。

Don’t answer a fool according to his folly, lest you also be like him.

yào zhào yú mèi rén de yú wàng huà huí dá tā , miǎn de tā zì yǐ wéi yǒu zhì huì 。

Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.

jiè yú mèi rén shǒu jì xìn de , shì kǎn duàn zì jǐ de jiǎo , zì shòu sǔn hài 。

One who sends a message by the hand of a fool is cutting off feet and drinking violence.

qué zǐ de jiǎo kōng cún wú yòng ; zhēn yán zài yú mèi rén de kǒu zhōng yě shì rú cǐ 。

Like the legs of the lame that hang loose, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

jiāng zūn róng gěi yú mèi rén de , hǎo xiàng rén bǎ shí zǐ bāo zài jī xián lǐ 。

As one who binds a stone in a sling, so is he who gives honor to a fool.

zhēn yán zài yú mèi rén de kǒu zhōng , hǎo xiàng jīng jí cì rù zuì hàn de shǒu 。

Like a thorn bush that goes into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

gù yú mèi rén de , yǔ gù guò lù rén de , jiù xiàng shè shāng zhòng rén de gōng jiàn shǒu 。

As an archer who wounds all, so is he who hires a fool or he who hires those who pass by.

yú mèi rén xíng yú wàng shì , xíng le yòu xíng , jiù rú gǒu zhuǎn guò lái chī tā suǒ tǔ de 。

As a dog that returns to his vomit, so is a fool who repeats his folly.

nǐ jiàn zì yǐ wéi yǒu zhì huì de rén ma ? yú mèi rén bǐ tā gèng yǒu zhǐ wàng 。

Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

lǎn duò rén shuō : dào shàng yǒu měng shī , jiē shàng yǒu zhuàng shī 。

The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road! A fierce lion roams the streets!”

mén zài shū niǔ zhuàn dòng , lǎn duò rén zài chuáng shàng yě shì rú cǐ 。

As the door turns on its hinges, so does the sluggard on his bed.

lǎn duò rén fàng shǒu zài pán zi lǐ , jiù shì xiàng kǒu chè huí yě yǐ wéi láo fá 。

The sluggard buries his hand in the dish. He is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.

lǎn duò rén kàn zì jǐ bǐ qī gè shàn yú yìng duì de rén gèng yǒu zhì huì 。

The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who answer with discretion.

guò lù bèi shì jī dòng , guǎn lǐ bù gān jǐ de zhēng jìng , hǎo xiàng rén jiū zhù gǒu ěr 。

Like one who grabs a dog’s ears is one who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own.

rén qī líng lín shè , què shuō : wǒ qǐ bú shì xì shuǎ ma ? tā jiù xiàng fēng kuáng de rén pāo zhì huǒ bǎ 、 lì jiàn , yǔ shā rén de bīng qì 。

Like a madman who shoots torches, arrows, and death,

is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, “Am I not joking?”

huǒ quē le chái jiù bì xī miè ; wú rén chuán shé , zhēng jìng biàn zhǐ xī 。

For lack of wood a fire goes out. Without gossip, a quarrel dies down.

hǎo zhēng jìng de rén shān huò zhēng duān , jiù rú yú huǒ jiā tàn , huǒ shàng jiā chái yí yàng 。

As coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire, so is a contentious man to kindling strife.

chuán shé rén de yán yǔ , rú tóng měi shí , shēn rù rén de xīn fù 。

The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, they go down into the innermost parts.

huǒ rè de zuǐ , jiān è de xīn , hǎo xiàng yín zhā bāo de wǎ qì 。

Like silver dross on an earthen vessel are the lips of a fervent one with an evil heart.

yuàn hèn rén de , yòng zuǐ fěn shì , xīn lǐ què cáng zhe guǐ zhà ;

A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but he harbors evil in his heart.

tā yòng tián yán mì yǔ , nǐ bù kě xìn tā , yīn wèi tā xīn zhōng yǒu qī yàng kě zēng wù de 。

When his speech is charming, don’t believe him, for there are seven abominations in his heart.

tā suī yòng guǐ zhà zhē yǎn zì jǐ de yuàn hèn , tā de xié è bì zài huì zhōng xiǎn lù 。

His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.

wā xiàn kēng de , zì jǐ bì diào zài qí zhōng ; gǔn shí tou de , shí tou bì fǎn gǔn zài tā shēn shàng 。

Whoever digs a pit shall fall into it. Whoever rolls a stone, it will come back on him.

xū huǎng de shé hèn tā suǒ yā shāng de rén ; chǎn mèi de kǒu bài huài rén de shì 。

A lying tongue hates those it hurts; and a flattering mouth works ruin.
